What is Spiritual Discernment?
What does it mean for me to be called to the ministry? What does God want for me? Is God truly calling me? How do I know God is calling me? How do I discern my calling?
These were all questions I had as I began my journey of spiritual enlightenment. This reflection paper will attempt to answer these questions and pose new ones for reflection along the way.
Understanding Spiritual Discernment
Spiritual discernment, for me, is a process of studying the Word, staying in constant prayer about God’s calling, and engaging in daily meditation to truly listen to God’s voice. It is a time to seek wisdom from God and truth in my life. Discernment is different for everyone, but for me, it resonates with the story of Samuel, who initially thought it was Eli speaking to him rather than recognizing God’s voice. It wasn’t until Eli guided Samuel that he responded to God’s call.
I wish I had an Eli in my life years ago when I first heard God’s call in a small Southern Baptist Church in Alabama. At that time, I didn’t recognize what God was asking of me, and I ignored the call, thinking I was unworthy to be God’s servant. Years later, I heard the call again, this time to leave my denomination and seek a new path. It was a challenging and emotional journey, culminating in a moment of clarity during prayer at Eppworth Forest. God’s presence was undeniable, and I finally embraced the call, bringing peace back into my life.
The Journey of Obedience
Luke 18:22 became a guiding scripture for me: “When Jesus heard this, He told him, 'You still lack one thing: Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.'” While I had nothing material to sell, the essence of the verse—"follow Me"—was clear. It meant leaving my comfort zone, my friends, and the congregation I was part of, to follow God’s path.
This led me to the Eel River Community Church of the Brethren. Initially hesitant, I grew to see it as my spiritual home. Through prayer and discernment, my family and I joined the church, and I stepped into leadership roles. Eventually, others in the church affirmed my calling to ministry. Through prayer, reflection, and God’s guidance, I embraced the call, serving as a student pastor and preparing for the unknown future God had planned.
Practices of Discernment
To ensure I remain aligned with God’s will, I have established daily practices of piety:
- Morning devotional and prayer before getting out of bed.
- Prayer during my commute to work.
- Reading a shared devotional with my spouse and discussing its meaning.
- Evening Bible study and prayer, followed by a joint prayer with my spouse before bed.
These practices have strengthened my connection with God and reinforced my sense of humility, as emphasized in John 12:26: “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me. Where I am, there My servant also will be. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.”
Facing Challenges and Remaining Vigilant
Discerning God’s call is not without challenges. Ephesians 6:10-18 reminds us to "put on the full armor of God" to withstand the tactics of the Devil. This passage serves as a cornerstone in my discernment process, helping me combat external forces that seek to invalidate my calling.
Additionally, I lean on trusted mentors and friends to provide honest feedback and guidance. Their support and wisdom are invaluable as I navigate this journey.
Reflections on Discernment
Romans 8:28-30 reassures me: “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” This scripture affirms that we are all called to do God’s work. Discernment is an ongoing process, requiring daily mindfulness and openness to God’s direction. Each day presents new opportunities to serve Him, and I strive to remain diligent in recognizing the signs He places before me.
