Introduction

How do I perceive Augustine’s understanding of God? To me, this seems to have evolved over the years. Before his conversion, it is unclear if Augustine had any strong feelings or understanding of God. However, after his conversion, Augustine began to see God in everything and came to understand God as omnipotent. In contrast, prior to his conversion, Augustine may have viewed himself as self-sufficient, perhaps even omnipotent in his own way.

Augustine’s Theology Post-Conversion

After his conversion, Augustine’s theology underwent a significant transformation. He spoke of a "fullness of being," and in this fullness, he understood God as an immutable truth. Augustine believed that since God was the creator of all beings, He was the ultimate, true being. This perspective highlights Augustine’s deep faith and understanding of God’s nature.

Augustine’s faith and comprehension remind me of Moses, one of the great figures of the Bible. I can imagine Moses speaking to God through the burning bush as a source of inspiration for Augustine. Similarly, I envision Augustine having profound, personal conversations with God, listening intently and opening himself up to hear the voice of the one true God—something modern Christians often struggle to do.

The Transformation of Augustine

Augustine’s journey from a diminished understanding of God, despite his mother’s wishes, to becoming a man of great wisdom and theological insight is remarkable. His understanding of God reached a level that is difficult for many, including myself, to fully comprehend. Augustine’s wisdom and relentless pursuit of knowledge are reminiscent of great philosophers like Socrates and Aristotle.

Reflection

As I reread these thoughts before submitting them and heading to my Brethren Way of Christ retreat, I feel my words lack flow and cohesion. I struggle to tie my ideas together, but this reflection has deepened my appreciation for Augustine’s profound understanding of God and his journey of faith.
